Do's and Don'ts of Color Treated Hair

Girls always feel excited when they decide to change their hair color. Hair dye is a sensational way to show off your personality but, I bet you know the amount of maintenance your color-treated hair requires. To ease out the burden, we’ve assembled this specific guide of do’s and don’ts for color-treated hair.  If you stick to them, they’ll help your dye last longer while maintaining the health of your vibrant hairs.

Must Do’s For Color Treated Hair

You can preserve the life of your new hue with proper care. Follow the do’s discussed below to keep your hair healthy while flaunting a dazzling color!

  • Do wash your tinted hair using cold or lukewarm water. Hot water will strip your hair color immediately while the cold water will keep your color last longer.
  • Do an avocado treatment. It’s an excellent source of vitamins, proteins, and fatty acids; just what your hairs need.
  • Do wash your hairs at night to prevent your scalp from getting sweaty. Use an organic spray in the morning to give a polished look to your color-treated hairs.
  • Do use a boar bristle brush instead of the plastic one. It is gentle on the tresses and helps distribute the natural oils throughout your hair which ultimately gives a shinier look to your colorful locks.

You should protect your hair from the burning rays of the sun. Prefer wearing a hat to protect your hue from fading.

Don’ts of Color Treated Hair

The do’s always come with the don’ts aye! All you beauties worried about how to get healthier dyed hair, just try to avoid or minimize the practices mentioned below.

  • Don’t use the heat styling tools too often with color-treated hair. Direct heating increases the risk of hair damage. However, if you cannot avoid it, make sure to use it at an optimum temperature or apply a heat protectant before using curling irons or hair straighteners.
  • Don’t wash your hair frequently as it can strip more natural oils from the scalp which then leads to rough hair.
  • Don’t use sulfate-rich shampoos as they contain salts which strip away the moisture from your hair. Loss of moisture is the primary cause of color fading.
  • Don’t apply color to the split ends. Trim them before dying to avoid uneven color that can ruin the look of your hair.
  • Don’t overuse hairsprays as they can strip the natural shine of your hair. Prefer using natural hair serums instead.

A word of wisdom though, these do’s and don’ts work only if you use the right color for your hair. In your pursuit of the perfect hue, you should be aware of the major ingredients in the hair colors. Most color brands contain potentially damaging chemicals like Petrol-based chemicals, PEGs, Paraben, Synthetic preservatives such as Methylisothiazolinone or Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Synthetic fragrances, Peroxide, Ammonia, PPD & Alcohol, the reason for dull colored hairs. The best way to avoid these chemicals is through natural ingredients. You can do your hair a favor by switching to natural ingredient based semi-permanent hair colors that are easy on the hair and keep them soft, strong, shiny and healthy.

What are salon professionals and customers saying about iroiro Premium Hair Colors?

We love to hear from you! Please keep them coming. Here are just some of actual testimonials from our awesome customers and salon professionals.

@vomitqueen_scumie - Finally retouched my hair. 💇👑💄💋 Only this time I used a completely different product. A #Vegan #CrueltyFree #AllNatural #PlantBased hair dye called @iroirocolors !! Not only is it infuzed with Yuzu-cranberry, but it contains #CoconutOil as well. @iroirocolors really brightend and defined my already existing blue and made is so soft, silky and left it smelling AMAZING. @iroirocolors also uses eco-pouches instead of plastic bottles or jars. That's a plus! It's super hard to find a hair dye that's true to its word and has no dangerous chemicals or synthetic ingredients. It's nice to finally find an amazing product. I suggest all you hair dye lovers give it a try! 💜💜💜

@elevatedfibers - Pictures do the richness of this color justice- My hair was and is super damaged from the past year or 2 or adventures with it..... this DYE made my hair feel Ah-may-ZING! There's no denying what coconut oil does for repair, but the conditioning of this brand- @iroirocolors - is phenomenal. I've tried pretty much every semi permanent and I've never had this even, full coverage, with just 2oz of product, if not less. I wish it was easier to pick up the gorgeous purple it shows in person, BUT my hair even had a tongue of turquoise left and gave me this VIBRANT non-muddy color. I used straight out of the tube purple 20 on my roots, Then diluted maybe a 1:1 ratio of color to conditioner to the rest of my hair that didn't have the shadow root base.
I seriously can't get over how awesome my hair feels- Oh and the SMELL is delicious!!!!

@rinadeedoeshair - @iroirocolors 6 shampoos and a month later and my color still looks AMAZING!

Deionized purified water

Cocos Nucifera Oil-Certified Organic
Our 100% Pure Certified Organic Coconut Oil is an excellent oil for extra conditioning and will not clog pores. Coconut oil is very popular and is a preferred hair oil around the world.
It is rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, which provide great conditioning and protection for human hair. It has a high moisture-retaining capacity; because it is not easily broken down or evaporated, it is very stable. It does not let moisture escape, thus keeping hair moist and soft and preventing breakage. Coconut oil is a better conditioner for hair than any synthetic conditioner available on the market.

Glyceryl Stearate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate / NatureMulse
Our NatureMulse is ECOCERT certified. NatureMulse improves moisturization, hair feel, and water resistance in our formulations! In clinical studies, it was found that lactylates remain on the hair, performing their moisturizing functions for more than six weeks under conditions of wash & wear!

It is compatible with all types and classes of ingredients! Based on Acyl Lactylates, which are wonderful for both skin and hair, anionic Lactylates are created through a reaction between the acyl group of fatty acids, and Lactic Acid. Both Fatty Acids and Lactic Acid are natural moisturizing factor constituents found in the skin! Wonderful viscosity enhancement, improved stability, and conditioning all-in-one!

Cetyl Alcohol
Cetearyl Alcohol is a mixture of naturally derived (Coconut and Palm Oils) fatty alcohols consisting predominantly of Cetyl and Stearyl Alcohol. This widely used fatty alcohol is often employed as the sole conditioning agent in crème rinse or hair conditioner formulations, as it adequately moisturizes and improves wet/dry comb out.

Vegetable Glycerin
Vegetable Glycerin, also referred to as Glycerin Vegetable, is a 100% natural humectant which absorbs, and holds, water.  Glycerin is a hygroscopic ingredient, which means that it draws, and holds, water.  Glycerin may be petro derived so it's important that it be purchased knowing whether it is vegetable, or petro, derived, if that's important to your product philosophy.  Our Vegetable Glycerin, is 100% vegetable derived and is Kosher certified.

Quaternium-31
Anti-static, gives hair a softer feel, easy comb out and control of fly-away hair. Often, other conditioning ingredients (such as Cetyl alcohol, Stearyl alcohol or Cetearyl alcohol) are added to make it thicker and more opaque. No build-up effect.

Behentrimonium Chloride
Conditioning agent made from colza oil obtained from the seeds of Brassica rapa, var. oleifera (oilseed turnip).Conditions, detangles, fights static, softens, and helps strengthen hair. Since it’s plant-based and not petrochemical-based, it doesn’t coat but penetrates the hair shaft for potent conditioning effects.

Hydrolysed Soy Protein
Enhances hair manageability, improves the body and texture of hair, improves feel and dry comb properties, contains cystine for hair strengthening and nourishment. This high quality vegetable sourced protein provides moisture retentive, protective, and sealing films. It adds shine, body, and manageability to hair care products.

Preservative
Natural preservative. Formaldehyde Free, Halogen Free and Paraben Free.
Mild and safe for a variety of applications, this preservative is used in rinse-off and leave-on products like creams, lotions, shampoo, liquid soap, shower gels and hair conditioners.

All of the ingredients are physically obtained from plants without altering their chemical structures. Natural Fragrances are appropriate for use in products where it is desirable to avoid the use of synthetics.

Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate
A high purity, versatile and readily biodegradable chelate based on L-glutamic acid, a natural and renewable raw material.

Citric Acid
Citric acid is a natural preservative that exists in many different fruits, vegetables and other products. It can also serve as a ph adjuster, which makes it a great ingredient for personal care products, food coloring, and many other solutions.

Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride
A unique hair conditioner derived from the Guar bean, and is a natural hydrocolloid. Guar Gum belongs to the legume family and is primarily cultivated on the Indian subcontinent. It offer several advantages for personal care formulators looking to add conditioning, and improved aesthetics, to their natural product lines, especially hair care.

Quinoa Protein
Quinoa protein is hydrolyzed from the Quinoa grain, through an enzymatic process. It offers a unique combination of molecular weight amino acids offering enhanced penetration for hair and skin nourishment along with film forming activity for greater repair, hydration, and shine. Hair will look smoother and feel silkier, it forms a protective barrier to protect the hair from environmental stresses, retains moisture in the hair, and provides nutrients to the hair.  Unlike the rest of the proteins that will each offer protection, repair, or moisturization Quinoa Protein will offer all of these attributes through enhanced hair penetration and substantivity for increased damage repair and cuticle protection.

What are some commonly used chemicals in other semi-permanent hair brands?

We do not include harmful chemicals and synthetic ingredients.  Here are list of just few common ingredients found in other popular semi-permanent hair colors on the market today.

Propylene Glycol

"It's strong enough to dissolve the barnacles off a boat," is how Linda Chae describes this solvent, which is also used in antifreeze and brake fluid. Chae, founder of Chae Organics, Inc points out that factory workers who handle propylene glycol must wear protective gear to prevent skin contact. That's because exposure can cause eye and skin irritation, headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

Methylisothiazolinone / Methylchloroisothiazolinone

Preservative that’s generally recommended for use only in rinse-off products such as cleansers or shampoos. Although used in leave-on products, methylisothiazolinone is known to be sensitizing when used in leave-on products. In fact, the American Contact Dermatitis Society named methylisothiazolinone its Allergen of the Year in 2013!

As with most ingredients with problematic potential, much depends on the amount used, but, as a general rule, if you see methylisothiazolinone in the middle of an ingredient list for a leave-on product, you should avoid it, particularly if you have sensitive skin or if this preservative is used in conjunction with sunscreen actives like octinoxate or avobenzone.

Also called MIT, this ingredient is often found in antibacterial products.
Unlike some synthetic chemicals, however, this one isn’t just a mild skin irritant. A recent study found the chemical may actually be linked to nerve damage, and it’s also known to be toxic in several other ways.

Methylparaben

Methylparaben is in the paraben family of preservatives used by the food, pharmaceutical, and personal care product industries. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors.

Stearalkonium chloride

First used by the fabric and paper industries as a softener and an anti-static agent, stearalkonium chloride is now commonly found in the cream rinses and conditioners used to soften our tresses. Yet the hard facts on this cationic surfactant show that it is a toxin known to set off allergic reactions. "Although it's a proven irritant, many companies use it in hair conditioning products because it's cheaper and easier to incorporate than proteins or herbals," says Masters.

DMDM Hydantoin

DMDM Hydantoin is sometimes considered dangerous because of its toxic formaldehyde component, although the percentage is so small that it has been approved safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel. It can cause irritation or an allergic reaction on sensitive skin.

DMDM hydantoin is an antimicrobial formaldehyde releaser preservative. People exposed to such formaldehyde-releasing ingredients may develop a formaldehyde allergy or an allergy to the ingredient itself and its decomposition products. In the U.S., approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products contain a formaldehyde-releaser and the frequency of contact allergy to these ingredients is much higher among Americans compared to studies in Europe.

PEG-100

The Cosmetics Database found PEG 100 Stearate to be a moderate to high hazard ingredient depending on usage. The EWG issues warnings regarding: cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, contamination concerns, irritation, and organ system toxicity.

According to a study published in the International Journal of Toxicology, PEGs (including PEG 100 Stearate) can contain harmful impurities, including: Ethylene Oxide, known to increase the incidences of uterine and breast cancers and of leukemia and brain cancer, according to experimental results reported by the National Toxicology Program; 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen; PAHs, known to increase the risk of breast cancer; lead; iron; and arsenic.

Products and formulas containing PEG 100 Stearate should not be used on broken or irritated skin. Although PEGs are considered safe for use topically on healthy skin, studies showed that patients suffering from severe burns were treated with PEG-based antimicrobial cream; this treatment resulted in kidney toxicity.
